Alberto Varello is an Aerospace Engineer, enrolled as PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. He earned a BSc degree with honors in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in March 2007. His final thesis focused on an innovative methodology in race bobsleigh design and the software interaction of aerodynamic and structural analyses. He started his MSc in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in Spring 2007, attending the aerospace structures and aeroelasticity Master variant. He began his final project working with Prof. Erasmo Carrera on structural higher-order beam models. In Fall 2008 he moved to San Diego, CA, to conduct a cooperation with Prof. Luciano Demasi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics of San Diego State University. Joining the computational aeroelasticity and structural dynamics research group at SDSU, his work focused on the analysis of aeroelastic response of non-planar wing configurations. He implemented a coupled fluid-structure formulation by means of refined finite elements and computational aerodynamic codes. The six-months US collaboration was fundamental part of his final project and he earned a MSc in Aerospace Engineering with honors in July 2009. In June 2010 his Master work was awarded the Agusta Westland Best Thesis Prize by Agusta Westland as the most groundbreaking thesis 2009 in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, in memory of Eng. Mario Pellerei. In July 2010 his thesis was awarded the Eng. Umberto Montalenti Prize by Politecnico di Torino as the thesis with features of major innovation among graduated in Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. In Fall 2009 he developed advanced 1D structural elements for the analysis of wind turbine blades as research assistant at Aerospace Engineering Department.
Since January 2010 he has been working on his PhD thesis in Turin under the supervision of Prof. Carrera. His doctoral research focuses on the development of advanced aeroelastic models and deals with different aerospace areas: the analysis of aerospace structures, the modelling of composite materials, the development of higher-order finite elements, the implementation of non-linear structural analysis, the design of smart structures, and the investigation of aeroelastic phenomena on lifting and non-lifting systems. Alberto Varello is the author of about ten works in international journals (Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Journal of Sound and Vibration) and conference proceedings (AIAA, WCCM, ECCOMAS). In a multisciplinary environment, the application field of his activity comprehends: non-conventional aircraft wings, helicopter rotor blades, missiles, turbine blades, and wind turbines.
